Candice in Korea

Gimbap

Picture
Gimbap is a popular fast food in Korea. It consists of rice(bap) and various other fillings wrapped in seaweed(gim). It is similar to maki rolls, but don't dare call it sushi! My favourite is chamchee(tuna) gimbap!

Bibimbap

One of my favourite meals is bibimbap. It consists of rice and various delicious veggies, and topped off with a fried egg. Always accompanied by red bean paste to spice things up. It is typically a vegetarian dish, however it can be served with minced beef.
I usually ask for Dolsat bibimbap, which is served in a steaming hot marble bowl. mmhmmm!

Kimchi Bokkeumbap

Picture
Bokkeumbap means fried rice, so this is kimchi fried rice. It's super delicious but very hot! And like many of my favourite dishes, it's served with a fried egg.

Albap

This colourful meal consists of rice and a variety of veggies and then topped with a tablespoon of caviar. Really really good flavour!

Mool naeng myun

Picture
This is a dish I thought I would never like, but it's a great way to cool down from the Korean heat. Basically it is a cold noodle dish. 'Mool' means water and 'naeng myun' is a type of noodle- buckwheat noodles. It is a simple meal consisting of noodles, a small selection of pickled veggies (usually carrots, raddish and cucumber), and a boiled egg all in an ice-cold tangy broth.

Bibim naeng myun

This dish is like mool naen myun...except minus the mool (water) and therefore it is super hot.

Makguksu

Picture
Another buckwheat noodle dish in cold broth with a variety of veggies (depending on the restaurant). The noodles usually darker and the ice broth isn't as tangy as mool naeng myun.

Samgyeopsal

Picture
This meal is typically had in the evening and is always a meal for two or more. Directly translated it means three (sam; 삼) layered (gyeop; 겹) meat (sal;살). It is thick slices of pork belly meat serve raw and unseasoned, which you have to then cook on the grill/ hot plate provided and anjoy eating straight off the grill along with many sides. Typical side dishes include lettuce, raw garlic, chilli peppers " , onion, kimchi and a dipping sauce. Samgyeopsal is also a popular meat for barbeques.

Duk doritang

Picture
Duk doritang, also called duk bokkumtang or duk maeungtang. "Duk" means chicken in Korean and "tang" is similar to stew. So, this is a spicy chicken stew with potatoes, carrots and some other veggies which are popular for stews. I really enjoy this meal, but I need it to be accompanied with a litre of water.
